Outstanding Management Skills are a key factor in any successful organisation. It is important that Children’s Social Services offer excellent support and development for its managers and is able to identify and grow its future managers. 
 
The Professional Development Unit is promoting a range of development opportunities which will support this endeavour.

Management Induction

Good induction of CSS managers new to their role is essential. If the manager is new to the organisation, arrangements should be made to attend the Directorate Induction Day. There is also an organisational checklist and suggested Induction process available to download.  In addition, please see the information about Induction for new managers.

Management Qualifications

A range of national accredited qualifications is available for new and experienced managers. A small number of places sponsored by the Childrens Social Services Training Group are available each year. This is subject to a selection process and selection criteria include business needs and an individual development need identified through the personal development process.

Level 3 Diplomas – First Line Management

This is for practicing managers or supervisors with a tightly defined area of responsibility, some limited opportunity for taking decisions and managing budgets, for the allocation of work to team members, colleagues or contractors. This qualification would also be appropriate for staff who aspire to move into a supervisory role.

Level 5 Diploma – Management and Leadership

This is for practicing managers with responsibility for allocating work to others, achieving specific results by using resources effectively, carrying out policy in your defined areas of authority, controlling limited financial budgets and contributing to broader activities such as change programmes and recruitment. You should have spent at least three years working in a management position or similar experience at this level and have achieved a management or equivalent qualification at level 3.
