Year 6
In order to solve a problem, use ICT to collect and process data and present their findings. Be able to interpret graphical data simply.

Generate, process, interpret, store and present data understanding the need for accuracy

E.g. In a scientific or geographical investigation. Note that mistakes in measurement of data leads to misleading graphs, look for inaccuracy or implausible results.

Use data collected to widen or extend an investigation, or explore a new hypothesis.

1

Think about what might happen if there were any errors or omissions.

How large quantities of data are organised.

Discuss how databases are used in everyday life. What happens if there are errors, inaccurate or biased information?

Record cards - a paper based database

Level 4:
I can use ICT to collect and find appropriate stored information.

I understand the need for care in framing questions.

I can save the info, add to, amend and combine different forms … from a variety of sources.

Level 5:
I can select only the info that is needed for a particular purpose …

I can check it is accurate and organise this information so that it is ready for processing.

2

Interpret information, to check it is relevant and reasonable.

To identify inaccurate data within a spreadsheet.

Use a spreadsheet showing a child’s change in height / weight that contains an error. Ask pupils to produce a line graph.  Does this help?

Pre-prepared Spreadsheet e.g. Excel / Number Magic / Textease Spreadsheet

3

Prepare information for development using ICT.

To enter data and check for errors within a spreadsheet.

Use a spreadsheet to record data gathered by pupils e.g. science investigation and check for errors using a line graph.

4

Interpret information, to check it is relevant and reasonable.

That databases may contain errors and the consequences of these.

Use a database containing some errors.  Demonstrate how to amend / delete data and ask pupils to identify errors and amend data.

5

Prepare information for development using ICT.

To enter data and check for errors within a database.

Use a database to record data gathered by pupils e.g. about the earth, sun and moon.  Ask pupils to use their skills to check for errors and make any amendments needed.
