Passport to the World
Be familiar with a range of places in the UK and overseas; appreciate similarities and differences between places and understand the reasons for them;
use a range of resources to find out about places
Teaching Resources
Create an Electronic Passport
The unit can be enriched by children having a 'passport' in which they record all the places they have 'visited' in the course of their work.
How well do you know the world you live in?
Year 6 Geography Quiz (WM School)
Create a branching database which identifies six different places ICT Link
On each day for six days, give the children two facts about a city or other location. The location is different every day. Ask them to guess which location the facts are about and to post their answers in a ‘guess the location’ box in the classroom. At the end of the six days, reveal the identity of the places.
Demonstrate how to create a branching database. For example, make a poster showing the branching structure, so that children can see how the computer version is constructed. Explain to the children that they will create a branching database to identify the six places they have just guessed.
Remind children of the need to construct yes/no questions, and discuss the sort of questions that might be asked, e.g. Is it in Europe ? Is it near the equator?
The children work in pairs to create a branching database that identifies the six places. Ask each group to test the others’ databases.
Photographic images of countries – select a continent, then a country.
The images are not free and are copyrighted, however they are useful for showing children what places around the world look like.
Survey of holiday destinations ICT Link Unit
Ask the children to interview a number of people to find out about their favourite holiday location and the reasons for their choice. Ask the children to find out where the places are and to enter their survey findings on a database. Ask them to produce graphs of their results and to analyse their findings. E.g. Which factor has the most impact on a choice of holiday?
Adopt a city
Ask the children to adopt a city and research it using the Internet They could record the weather in their city for a week, record the information in a spreadsheet and produce graphs to represent findings. They could use a WP or DTP package to produce a report on their city, or create a multimedia presentation and make their presentation to the class.
