At this point the child begins to have a conversation with the drawing. Ideas are recorded which are then thoughtfully evaluated and discarded or developed through more drawings. The product is a realisation of the final drawing.
Year 4:
This girl combined her ideas for Stan as a cowboy and a spaceman, playing with "alien hair" to develop a figure, complete with space helmet, which combines elements of all three ideas.


Year 4:
This boy has drawn a kit of body parts from which he chooses to create his figure. He feels no need to draw a complete figure on his design sheet. He can switch between the image in his head and the use of drawing to externalise the details.
