Using ICT with the able child in the Literacy Hour

Using the Internet to support research in the Literacy Hour: objectives

NLS Year 6 Term 1: pupils should study autobiography and biography.
QCA ICT Unit 6D: Using the Internet to search large databases

In this unit children learn to use large sources of information [...]. They will use, skim read and take in information to be able to own it for themselves and interpret it with others. At times they will be critical of content and may be able to check for different viewpoints. Children will present the researched information in a form suitable to the needs of their audience.

These two areas of study can be combined and then expanded, depending on the needs and abilities of the pupils. Our list of sites aims to save teachers time in searching for suitable sources.

The research objective(s) may be:
To find out more about an author
To investigate whether the author's life has any bearing on the style or content of his/her books
To discover how a particular author approaches the task of writing
To look for similarities and differences in authors' approach to writing
To look for help in organising own writing habits
To become aware of the nature of the site - who has written it, target audience, the accuracy and quality of information
To compare several sites about one author, bearing in mind the above points

To evaluate the success of a site - would you want to revisit it, and why? What advantages (if any) over print sources?

To compare information given in an interview with a biographical or autobiographical account
