What is Podacasting?

Podcasting, according to Wikipedia "is the practice of making audio files available online in a way that allows software to automatically detect new files and download them". This is achieved using an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed to provide information about a collection of audio files in MP3 format.

Simple to create requiring just a microphone, PC/Laptop and an Internet connection, Podcasts are now being increasingly used by children in the classroom to:

  • Record Lessons
  • Listen to texts
  • Report on school visits.
  • Dictate and record their thoughts and ideas
  • Create audio books and plays
  • Publish Interviews
  • Study the work of different musicians and composers
  • Improve their MFL speaking skills
  • Create radio broadcasts
  • Set-up a school Radio or News Station

Our guide, “An introduction to Podcasting,” is intended to show how easy it is for learners to use Podium to create and share audio files. Hopefully, after using the guide, schools and teachers will take the initiative and start using Podcasting to promote the use of ICT across the curriculum and to challenge children to create learning resources for others.
