Case Study:  The Nonington Village Study: Key Stage 2
"Publishing and sharing our learning with others"

Key Stage 2 pupils from Nonington Primary School recently used the “I-Got-Map 120” to publish their reports, poems and art work about “Nonington Past and Present” on the Internet for parents and members of the local community to view and read. Commencing in November 2009 with a three hour walk around the village led by Ian Coulson (ASK History Advisor), the pupils visited the village Church and several other historic landmarks including The Toll House, The Old Village Shop and The Rectory. To “map” their walk they used data loggers to record their journey in two stages. The first records the journey to the village church and the North Road, and the second, from the Church to the end of Pinners Lane.

The Toll House, by SineadFollowing the walk the pupils proceeded to research and write about the places visited. Their written work included reports, stories and poems.  To illustrate their work they created full size drawings using charcoal and other art tools. Some pupils used USB Graphics Pads to explore different art techniques and styles.

Copies of Artrage 2.5 were loaded on all the school laptops for pupils to use with the USB Graphics Pads.

At the end of project pupils work (reports, poems and art work) will be uploaded and published on the two route maps. Details and links to the two maps will be published on the Nonington Primary School web-site in spring 2010. To comment on the pupil’s work and to provide more information about the places visited, parents and members of the local community will be invited to “post” additional information in the comments box at the foot of each web page. Forwarded to the school office all e-mail comments will be checked and moderated by the class teachers before they are read by the pupils.

Next Steps:

Following their study of “Nonington Past and Present” the pupils plan to use the information gathered to design and make 3-D sculptures to portray famous events from the past and share their future hopes for the village. Supported by staff and students from the “University of the Creative Arts” in Canterbury (UCA) pupils will be encouraged to use a wide range of materials to create their models.

Again, at the end of the project their sculptures will be displayed on Google Maps. However, this time photographs of the sculptures will be displayed on the map where the pupils would like the sculptures to be sited.

To receive feedback on their ideas pupil’s plan to share their ideas with the Parish Council and discuss erecting a scale replica of one or more of the designs in the village for future generations to view.
