Kent GPS Data Logger Projects

Outlined in this report are some of the GPS projects taking place across Kent in 2010. They range from pupils using the devices to create a record about their local village to using school grounds to set mathematical challenges. In these examples the duration of the activities varies from a single lesson to a six week project. In some the pupils are responsible for collecting the information. In others the routes have been created by adults. However, in both the challenge is the same. Simply, to use the information published on the route maps to answer questions and to inform future learning.

Schools participating in Kent Birdwatch 2010 will have the opportunity to use data loggers to create and publish “bird walks” around their school grounds.

Why use a GPS Data Logger?

GPS data loggers are now being used to support a wide range of learning activities. Simple to operate the devices challenge pupils to consider how they can use ICT to store and creatively share information with others. Used to support activities linked to all areas of the curriculum pupils are now being frequently challenged to use the device to:

·        Record their journey between 2 or more fixed points
·        Use digital cameras to add photographic details to a route
·        Add a commentary (text) to a previously created route
·        Prepare questions for others to answer about their route
·        Add additional information to a route created by others

·        Use a previously created route to find their way to a stated location (orienteering)
