From Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3

The concept of a bridging project would be to provide an IT based activity for Y6 pupils to complete in school, possibly after the SATS. This would lead to a “finished” product at the end of KS2, which would then be passed up to KS3 to form the basis of an activity for the first term in Y7.

Transition in ICT

What most children should have learnt in ICT by the end of key stage 2.

Awards for KS2/3 Transition in ICT
These awards were launched at the BETT Exhibition in January 2004 as a way of getting collective insight by investigating a particular learning challenge (in this case Key Stage 2-3 Transition in ICT) through disciplined innovation.

East Riding has an assessment program for the end of Key Stage 2 ICT.

Chocolate Bar Project
Oxfordshire
carry out an ICT transition project based around around a ‘chocolate wrapper’. The project includes carrying out a market research exercise; researching current chocolate bars; designing packaging; designing a poster-style advertisement; deciding on the best materials for the wrapping; composing a jingle for a television or radio programme; producing a spreadsheet for selling their products; and creating a presentation promoting the product to retail outlets.

The graphic design and jingle is then transferred to secondary schools for pupils to use in their first ICT task at KS3 which is to produce a multimedia presentation .

On their site they have many downloads to support the project.

Glyn Derw High School in Cardiff base their transition project on World War II The KS 2 children create a newspaper on the war and then this is developed further during Y7, with the possibility of extending the task into a multimedia version (e.g. PowerPoint or web-page).
