Queries with more than one step

Lesson 5 - Learning objectives

We can carry out a search with more than one step to answer a question.
We can plan a strategy to find the data we need.

Search then graph

•  Which were the most popular names for babies in 1841? (Age less than 2)

Search for Age < 2 then plot a pie chart of First name.

•  Which were most popular in 1871?

Why is there such a difference? Who might people want to name their children after? What are the most popular names today?

•  Did people over 65 have to work? What jobs did they do?

How did you find that out?

Searches with more than one step
(narrowing down)

Note for teachers: if children can see that "and" is in the natural language of the question, it makes this type of search much easier to understand!

How many labourers were over 60?

Another way of asking this is: "Which people were labourers AND over 60?"

Search for: Occupation includes labourer AND Age > 60

Who was over 30 years old in 1871, and born in Guston?

Are they in the 1841 census?
