Olympics Data Handling Project
Outcomes

Summary of outcomes

It is virtually impossible to draw general conclusions from such a small-scale project. Even so, evidence from the lessons sheds light on certain issues of teaching and learning with ICT. Participants agree that they have gained a better understanding of these areas:

Impact of the ICT room and large display

Appropriate starting points

Links to the Mathematics curriculum

What ICT and Mathematics skills need to be taught

Good questions for investigation

Knowledge the teacher must possess

The evidence indicates that there is support for these learning outcomes:

Gaining some understanding of formal concepts, illustrated by visual representation

Understanding graph features

Using graphs as a basis for prediction

Using oral language to make comparisons and tell what graphs show

Acquiring specialised language: "We're going to input a formula."

These issues warrant further investigation:

Comparisons between the spreadsheet and database: how information structures allow different questions to be answered

The impact of display arrangements in whole-class teaching.
