Village Study Detectives

Throughout this day the children will encounter a very hands-on approach to learning about settlements; why they are where they are, how they used to be, and how they could be in the future.

The day begins with a short introduction to Horton Kirby Village; looking at maps and aerial photos, as well as historical maps and photos to show how the village has changed. During this session the children will rehearse how to use compasses and maps to find their way around.

The children will then set off on a mission to find clues that have been hidden around the village. In order to do this, they will need to use their map reading and compass reading skills. Each of the clues will then ask them questions about aspects of the village; encouraging the children to think carefully about services, recreational facilities, jobs and where people live.

After a later lunch the children will be provided with some more information about their find from the morning. They will then be challenegd to use this information to develop their own map of Horton Kirby in the future! This activity will allow children the opportunity to use map symbols and compass roses.
