The Kent Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education

REact! A creative vision for Religious Education 2012

The revised syllabus was produced by Kent SACRE during 2011 with the help and support of a specialist RE adviser. In adopting the latest version of the syllabus, Kent SACRE hopes teachers in Kent will be enabled to offer pupils the key values that have been treasured by all religious traditions. Regardless of religious belief or conviction, these values are shared by many and have shaped Kent’s past, are contributing to its present and will continue to mould its future.

As there are a number of important developments underway, nationally, that are likely to have major influences on the teaching and learning of Religious Education in Kent schools in the coming years, this syllabus has been revised to take account of the present situation. The previous syllabus, REact: A creative vision for Religious Education” (2006) was well received and is well understood. Therefore it was decided not to make major changes, at this stage, as a further revision may be necessary as the review of the National Curriculum takes place. Since completion of this revision (December 2011), changes to approved qualifications have already been announced. The main changes to the Agreed Syllabus are detailed in the attached.

Support for Teaching Buddhism at Key Stage 3

Karen Burke (AST for RE) has produced some guidance for addressing Buddhism at Key Stage 3 in line with the Kent Agreed Syllabus

Learning about and learning from Sikhism: the transition unit

A 56 page resource has been published and is in Kent schools now, to support teachers in Year 6 and Key Stage 3 in their planning and development of the transition unit as required by the Kent Agreed Syllabus.

Available for download are some of the pictures and drawings used in the Sikhism transition unit resource:

Examples of levels in RE linked to the requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus

The small scale project led by Liz Pope (one of the RE ASTs) looking at assessment issues in the context of the Kent Agreed Syllabus is completed and the CD-Rom 'Assessing RE: Some Practical Examples' has been sent to all Kent Schools. It covers some of the theory issues e.g. sample RE Assessment policies, what is considered good practice, plenty of 'I can...' statements which can be adapted for different units of work, and samples of pupils' work which the working party of teachers levelled, making suggestions for improving them further. It is hoped that the CD-Rom will encourage teachers to discuss assessment issues further within their schools.

I can... statements

I can can… statements can provide a very useful focus of RE development that aids both the teacher in their planning, task setting and assessment and makes learning more accessible for the pupils. Here are a few examples of I can… statements linked to the levels of the Kent Agreed Syllabus and focusing on different content areas. I hope you find them useful as starting points for writing your own I can… statements linked to the statutory levels of the Syllabus and to the content focus you have developed.

Support for Teaching Hinduism at Key Stage Three

Here is one possible way you can map the Hinduism section of the new Kent Agreed Syllabus REact for Key Stage 3. It was designed for a Grammar school so the targets and some of the assessment suggestion may have to be adapted for your context. Please note that the Year 7 and 8 Hinduism schemes are only a new term apart in reality so the differentiation between them is not as great as the differentiation between Year 8 and 9.

The scheme is provided in a PDF format and also as word documents so that they can be adapted to meet different school contexts.

Support for Teaching Islam (Key Stages 2 & 3)

In April/May 2008 the mosques at Margate and at Tunbridge Wells hosted twilight visits for teachers and TAs which together over 150 attended. Here are a few pictures of the interior of Margate Mosque that you may find helpful - the call to prayer, the prayer clocks and some of the prayer taking place in the mosque. Pictures of Tunbridge Wells will be added at a later date.
