There have been some useful new additions to the website which should prove helpful both to existing and new centres e.g. Speaking Examiner's booklets explaining how to prepare for and conduct a speaking test (the most recent questionnaire feedback showed this to be the most popular information/training request).

Statement on languages requirement for university entrance from the Russell Group

Following a number of queries about whether some universities, notably those in the prestigious Russell Group, were considering making a foreign language at GCSE an entrance requirement, Vincent Everitt, a member of the ALL Executive Council has asked the Russell Group to clarify its current position. This reply has been received:

The Russell Group welcomed the Dearing review of languages and we are keenly aware of the declining participation in modern foreign languages in state schools.

As you will know, UCL have announced that they will be requiring a GCSE in a modern foreign language for entry from 2012. No other Russell Group university has since made a similar announcement.

At this stage there is no overarching Russell Group policy on this issue. At present, this remains a matter for each individual university to determine as part of their recruitment and selection policy.
