Renewing the Key Stage 3 Framework for Languages
Foreign Language Assistant Salaries
The DCSF has let it be known that the statutory clearance process for the 2009/10 teacher pay rates has been completed. The new recommended allowance for foreign language assistants in the academic year 2009/10 is therefore £6,872. The figure is based on the standard 8-month period of appointment. If local authorities or governing bodies wish to employ a foreign language assistant for a longer period, the minimum monthly rate of pay for any additional period should be at the same equivalent monthly rate of £859.00.
This allowance has been calculated according to scale point 1 of the unqualified teachers’ pay scale, and takes account of the recommended pay award for 2009/10.
The London area allowances have also been increased for 2009/10. Details of all relevant calculations are set out in the foreign language assistants 2009/10 calculations sheet.
Practical examples of how schools are implementing the new curriculum
The case studies are structured around the 'three questions' of the new curriculum:
- What do we want to achieve?
- How do we organise learning?
- How well are we achieving our aims?
We hope you will find them a source of ideas from which you can develop aspects of yourown curriculum, adapting the ideas to suit the needs of your learners, your current practice, the expertise and enthusiasms of the languages team and whole school priorities. Link to case studies.....

Routes into Languages
The Routes into Languages programme aims to increase the take-up of language courses in higher education by encouraging more young people to continue studying languages at school and college and then at university, especially those from social groups currently under-reprersented in language study. A key feature is to provide the secondary, FE & HE education sectors with the resources to work together to promote language study.
The Routes into Languages newsletter is published three times a year and is distributed free to subscribers in the UK. It aims to keep the languages community up-to-date with news from around the Routes into Languages regional consortia and national networks. You can find out more about the programme, Routes events and subscribe to the newsletter on the Routes into Languages website.
