The Kent Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education:
REact: a creative vision for Religious Education
The current syllabus was introduced to Kent schools from January 2007 to be implemented during the academic year September 2007 to August 2008. A series of half day sessions for headteachers and governors ‘Introducing the Agreed Syllabus’ (link here to PowerPoint presentation given at these sessions) were held during February/March 2007 and similarly a series of half day sessions for RE subject leaders ‘Implementing the Agreed Syllabus’ were also held during that period. The Advisory Service Kent is, and will continue to provide a range on in-service training and professional development opportunities based around the Kent Agreed Syllabus.

Learning about and learning from Sikhism: the transition unit
A 56 page resource has been published and is in Kent schools now, to support teachers in Year 6 and Key Stage 3 in their planning and development of the transition unit as required by the Kent Agreed Syllabus.
Available for download are some of the pictures and drawings used in the Sikhism transition unit resource:
Examples of levels in RE linked to the requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus.
The small scale project led by Liz Pope (one of the RE ASTs) looking at assessment issues in the context of the Kent Agreed Syllabus is completed and the CD-Rom 'Assessing RE: Some Practical Examples' has been sent to all Kent Schools. It covers some of the theory issues e.g. sample RE Assessment policies, what is considered good practice, plenty of 'I can...' statements which can be adapted for different units of work, and samples of pupils' work which the working party of teachers levelled, making suggestions for improving them further. It is hoped that the CD-Rom will encourage teachers to discuss assessment issues further within their schools.
I can can… statements can provide a very useful focus of RE development that aids both the teacher in their planning, task setting and assessment and makes learning more accessible for the pupils. Here are a few examples of I can… statements linked to the levels of the Kent Agreed Syllabus and focusing on different content areas. I hope you find them useful as starting points for writing your own I can… statements linked to the statutory levels of the Syllabus and to the content focus you have developed.
Support for teaching Hinduism at Key Stage 1
Here is a PowerPoint presentation linked to the requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus on teaching Hinduism in Key Stage 1. The PowerPoint focuses on Hindu worship in the home and there are some background notes for teachers. Thanks go to Ushma Williams, the Hindu representative on Kent SACRE for sharing puja in her home with us.
Katie Milborrow of Hawkinge Primary School has kindly offered the following 'Thinking Starters' for teaching Hinduism (Year 2 Terms 1 & 2). Why not give them a go and see how your pupils respond?
Support for Teaching Islam (Key Stages 2 & 3)In April/May 2008 the mosques at Margate and at Tunbridge Wells hosted twilight visits for teachers and TAs which together over 150 attended. Here are a few pictures of the interior of Margate Mosque that you may find helpful - the call to prayer, the prayer clocks and some of the prayer taking place in the mosque. Pictures of Tunbridge Wells will be added at a later date.
