Primary History

Why history is so important Ra

Ever wondered why history is so important and what it means to be critically aware of the world, both past and present.

Being an active History teacher can get you into trouble, even in some European countries, as shown by this email that Chris Culpin, Director of SHP, received.

Assessing pupil progress: assessment tasks for key stages 1, 2 and 3 history from QCA

Teacher assessment activities are available for history at key stages 1, 2 and 3. The new materials aim to help teachers:

        • plan for assessment activities
        • investigate pupils' understanding and identify learning needs
        • focus support where it is needed
        • encourage pupils to develop techniques for monitoring their own progression.

Each key stage pack includes a Teacher's Guide which explains how to use the materials and some booklets containing examples of assessment activities which are linked to some of the most commonly taught topics in the key stage.
These can be ordered from the QCA orderline at
http://orderline.qca.org.uk/bookstore.asp?FO=1169455 or by telephone on 08700 606015.

Improving the effectiveness of pupil work in classrooms project

This research newsletter for teachers provides a summary of the findings and implications for practice from the Social Pedagogic Research into Group work project (SPRinG) which ran from 2000 until 2005.
The project focused on looking at ways to enhance the effective use of group work across Key Stages 1 to 3. The project web-site aims to provide resources for practice on pupil grouping as well as a planned discussion forum where practitioners will have the opportunity to discuss pupil grouping issues. You can access the newsletter at the
