 Introduction

The Ashford Shepway Learning Network (ASLN) covers four Local Childrens Services Partnerships (LCSPs), Ashford 1, Ashford Rural, Shepway 1, and Shepway Rural. The LCSPs aim to raise standards and achievements for children and young people and help schools and settings to address the Every Child Matters Agenda. All schools within each of the four partnerships have membership to the Ashford and Shepway Learning Network. The Network organises bespoke CPD to meet the Partnerships' needs, and is led by locality staff. Currently the ASLN is comprised of:

76 Primary Schools
12 Secondary Schools
4 Special Schools
8 Units

Members of ASLN meet about 6 times a year, usually on a Friday at Kroner House in Ashford. The Learning Network is chaired by Stephen Smith (LCSP manager for Shepway Rural) who leads on behalf of all four of the LCSP managers. Other LCSP managers sometimes attend the Learning Network meetings as necessary. The permanent members of the Learning Network are listed below in the Key Contacts section, various other staff are invited to attend the meetings as required.

The Learning Network considers the adequacy of available training provision in the context of LCSP needs and priorities, currently concerened with CPD provision for staff who teach, supervise or otherwise have a significant effect on education and wellbeing of pupils. When appropriate it arranges training courses in respect of topics/subjects where it finds that there is unmet need/demand or insufficient provision. This is achieved by tailoring CPD to fit local need or by arranging bespoke training events.

Andy will be hosting two conferences at The Ashford International Hotel. On the 15th March the conference will be aimed at Primary Colleagues and on the 16th March the conference will be aimed at Secondary Colleagues.
During the conferences, Andy will consider the way ahead for education leaders beyond the constraints recently imposed by standardisation. He will deal with fundamental issues about learning and schools. The workshop sets out by briefly covering the three ways that have support change in education in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Using evidence drawn from diverse research projects, Andy selects four examples of hope for the future:

  • The worlds highest performaing education system.
  • The most turned around school district in england.
  • A professional network of 300 underperforming schools.
  • Outstanding instances of community organisation.

Andy will challenge you to think beyond your immediate comfort zone. He will confront the mentality driving short term gains at the expense of deeper and profound learning. He will use case studies from school where improvement lasts and growth is sustainable. Drawing on evidence from health, sport and the business sectors.

 Advanced Skills Teachers

Photo of a teacher

Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs) are excellent teachers who have the ability to coach and mentor other teachers and build capacity in their own and other schools, based on an agreed time period allocated specifically for this purpose. Currently there are approximately 110 ASTs across the Local Authority. Of this total figure Ashford and Shepway has 17 ASTs of which 4 are school funded with a further 8 potential/aspiring ASTs within the Learning Network.

Ashford and Shepway Learning Network are currently working in partnership with their Training School, Folkestone School for Girls to further develop opportunities for ASTs in respect of their own development and their ongoing role in service improvement. A recent meeting regards future developments was recently held and was well attened by both aspiring and current ASTs and raised AST CPD needs, role expectations, and development opportunities for aspiring ASTs. The Training School is currently planning to meet these CPD through twilight sessions, and work towards providing shadowing opportunities.

 Projects

Vocal Force

Advisory Service Kent has secured significant funding from the National Singing Strategy for both Ashford and Ashford Rural Partnerships to launch a Vocal Force project within their respective schools. This project aims to intensively train at least 50 staff during 2009-11 to be confident singing leaders.  There are opportunities to meet the Vocal Force team, who will set out the full details of the project. Music subject leaders will also be very welcome.

The flyer outlines this exciting and worthwhile programme for 2009-10. This is a wonderful opportunity for staff to benefit from funded, long term, high quality training which will have a positive impact on children's enjoyment and skills in singing. We are happy to take applications to join the project through out its duration.

Quotes from participants:
"Thankyou so much for all your help in my getting to see Lin Marsh in action- Wow! Very grateful to have been there."

"I really enjoyed the day and have felt my confidence grow. So thankyou for the work that is going on. It is appreciated."

If you wish to take part in this exciting project please email your name, role, base and contact details to Matthew Freeman.

Teaching Assistants

High quality bespoke professional development for Teaching Assistants was a priority for the local learning network. To date two very successful courses have been run giving Teaching Assistants time away from school, the opportunity to reflect on their practice and to meet, network and share practice with other professionals undertaking the same work. more...
