Appointing and Developing Headteachers

Appointment of Headteachers

The appointment of a headteacher is the single most important task for a governing body to undertake. There is a wealth of evidence to indicate that the quality of leadership provided by the headteacher is the most significant factor affecting the overall performance of the school.

When compared with other staff appointments, the selection of the headteacher presents governors with particular challenges:

  • In many cases, appointing a headteacher will be a new venture for governors
  • Unlike other appointments the headteacher must not be involved in the appointment of the successor so is not available to provide governors with advice.

To support Governing Bodies in this process Children, Families and Education Directorate has prepared guidance for governors which should be available via the Leadership and Workforce Development section in the ASK web pages.

The
National College for School Leadership has also published advice.

Action points

When a Governing Body receives a headteacher resignation they should:

  • Contact the Area Children's Services Officer (and the School Improvement Partner) who will identify a Lead Officer from the Local Authority to guide you through the process and identify the wide range of professional support, advice and guidance

Be prepared

Governor Professional Development & Training has a course in preparation which is specifically designed to give practice in the skills required to work through the appointment process.
