 Our Main Responsibilities

Kent has almost 7,000 governors and our work is to ensure they are effectively supported through training and development.

To do this, we run a core Governor Training Programme. Details of the full annual programme are available by following the links below and a copy is sent to all governors and clerks early in the autumn and we also publish two programme updates during the year one in the spring and one in the summer which are circulated to all governors and clerks via our publication 'The Governor'.

How we help schools

  • We hold induction sessions for new governors and chairs to equip them for their new role
  • We hold courses to inform governors of their roles and responsibilities, their part in school self evaluation and its link to school improvement planning and OFSTED inspection,
  • We hold local courses for governors with specific responsibilities: (e.g. Personnel, Finance, SEN and Early Years) to explore current issues, share experiences and to enable governors to ask the right questions to ensure standards are raised within their school,
  • We run in-house training sessions tailored to an individual governing body’s needs and we encourage schools to have joint sessions (schools supporting schools),
  • We run an annual conference to inform governors of a current national issue and to promote good practice and sharing,

Last year, 411 training sessions were held with over 4,500 governors participating. We are delighted that evaluations show a very high level of satisfaction of our training. Governor Services publish an annual report each year to share our successes.

If you have any specific Training Needs, please contact us to see how we can help.

Training & Development

Kent CPD Online, Developing the Children's Workforce

Schools are able to buy in to an annual package, using part of their Standards Fund to purchase training and development services.

Governor Services provide training and development for governors, headteachers and clerks across Kent and we do this by:

  • providing an annual conference on topical issues
  • providing a published, comprehensive and flexible programme of training for individual governors which addresses both national and local priorities
  • focussing particularly on school improvement and better outcomes for Ofsted inspections
  • focussing on the importance of school self evaluation, planning and awareness of the Five Outcomes for Children and inclusion of vulnerable groups
  • emphasising the governors’ strategic role as part of the leadership of the school
  • facilitating induction sessions for new governors
  • facilitating induction sessions for new chairs of governors
  • buying into an online training package for governors to access
  • the provision of in-house sessions for individual governing bodies, groups of schools and local partnerships which focus on local needs
  • by administering the clerks’ training programme
  • individual mentoring and coaching.
