Higher Level Teaching AssistantTeaching degree presentation

HLTA is a national programme now established in Kent. Developed as a further means of supporting children's learning, HLTA provides for a teaching assistant to teach classes under a teacher's indirect supervision and direction and is an opportunity open to all sectors of education.

  • The DfES and the Training & Development Agency for Schools set out the professional standards for HLTA and local Providers are appointed to deliver the Programme. There are two ways forward - a 3½-day Pre-Assessment Preparation and Assessment Route or a Full Training and Assessment Route (17 taught days + school-based study). The Full Training Programme also offers an optional link to the Canterbury Christ Church University Foundation Degree, together with a growing number of specialisms, eg PE, Primary Modern Language, SEN and Early Years.
  • The LEA has been allocated funds to support the training and assessment of HLTAs. To access this funding, potential candidates will need to provide evidence/supporting statements that show:-
  • Details of overall experience - with a minimum of 1-year's relevant involvement with young people, including experience in supporting pupils/students and teachers.
  • Recent, relevant and significant experience of teaching - with individuals, small groups and especially classes.
  • Evidence of any successfully completed qualifications (eg NVQ 'Teaching Assistant' Level 2) plus details of any other relevant CPD.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy qualifications equivalent to at least level 2 standard of the National Qualifications Framework.
  • A Level 3 qualification, for example qualification(s) at 'A' level or BTEC (only necessary for those wishing to pursue the full training programme with link to CCCU foundation degree).
  • A short personal statement - 'Why me as an HLTA?'
  • Confirmation of a successful CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check.
  • Supporting note from the headteacher together with details of when and how the individual with the status would be involved in school life - some supported applications could be accommodated even if they will not be deployed immediately.
