Governor Training - Responsibilities

Our Main Responsibilities

Kent has almost 8,000 governors and our work is to ensure they are effectively supported through training and development.

To do this, we run an extensive Governor Training Programme. Details of the full annual programme are available by following the links below and a copy is sent to the Headteacher, Chair of Governors, Training and Development Governor and the Clerk to Governors early in the autumn.

Three times a year we publish an update to the programme in ‘Look and Book’ which is sent to the homes of every governor with the governors’ Briefing Notes.

Kent offers the BTEC Advanced Certificate in School Governance and some 20 governors have already completed this extended study. If you are interested, please contact us using the details below.

How we Help Schools

  • We hold induction sessions for new governors and chairs to equip them for their new role
  • We hold courses to inform governors of their roles and responsibilities, their part in school self evaluation and its link to school improvement planning and OFSTED inspection,
  • We hold local seminars/courses for governors with specific responsibilities: (e.g. Primary Curriculum, Personnel, Finance Training & Dev., AEN, and Early Years,) to explore current issues, share experiences and to enable governors to ask the right questions to ensure standards are raised within their school,
  • We run bespoke training sessions tailored to an individual governing body’s /cluster’s needs including the very popular “Governing Body Self Review”,
  • We run an annual conference to inform governors of a current national issue and to promote good practice and sharing,

Last year, 411 training sessions were held with over 4,500 governors participating. We are delighted that evaluations show a very high level of satisfaction of our training. We publish an annual report each spring in conjunction with the School Governance Unit which shares our successes.

If you have any specific Training Needs, please contact us to see how we can help.
