Early Professional Development - Graduate Teacher Programme

GRADUATE TEACHER PROGRAMME

KENT COUNTY COUNCIL
EMPLOYMENT BASED INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an employment-based route into Initial Teacher Training (ITT) whereby successful candidates will receive Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at the end of the programme. These programmes are designed for individuals, who are best-suited to on-the-job training and who have gained valuable experience in previous professions, to bring their various skills into teaching. Applicants must have a batchelor's degree from a British University or equivalent. Over 50% of the degree must be in a subject in which the applicant wishes to train for secondary. Applicants must also have a GCSE Maths and English grade C equivalent plus Science grade C for primary. (Please note NARIC comparability statements for overseas qualifications must be provided at the time of application)

Kent County Council links with all maintained or independent schools in Kent. If you wish to train outside these areas, please visit the TDA website for a list of other training providers. Kent County Council does not have any places on the Registered Teacher Programme (RTP).

Schools can apply for salary and/or training grants or they can fund the training themselves. Salary grants of £14,500 are available only for trainees who are supernumerary i.e. not filling a vacancy. A proportion of the training grant will be available to schools.

Trainees who fill a vacancy must be experienced in schools and the school must commit to a maximum timetable of 80% allowing time for training, release for core days and a placement of 3 weeks in another school.

The TDA publish a variety of documents which you will find useful before, during and after your training.

All interested candidates, please note:

The Graduate Teacher Programme route into teaching has strict entry criteria set by the Training and Development Agency (TDA).

  • You are strongly advised to visit their website to access and read their guidance in ‘How to apply for the Graduate Teacher and Registered Teacher Programme in England and Wales’.
  • Training must comply with the requirements set out in the document ‘Qualifying to Teach’. Trainees work towards meeting all of the Standards found in this document which should be accessed and read carefully before making an application. Details and downloads available on the TDA website.
  • Look at our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ to see how we run the programme.
  • Places available for the GTP are allocated to us directly by the TDA. There is competition for places and we are obliged to take the highest quality candidates that we can find in the best available training situations. The start date will b e September of each year. Please note the deadline below:

Applications can be made in two ways:

Route A

If you have a school which is prepared to support you then you should apply to that school. The school should invite you for an interview before your application and then apply to the EBITT with you.

Route B

If you do not have a school, a list of partner schools and schools who will consider a GTP will be regularly posted on the website.
It is best to try to find your own school but if you are unsuccessful you can apply without a school and the EBITT will try to match you to a post, although this cannot be guaranteed.

You will be expected to undertake a brief written task and give a short presentation, a group task as well as an interview. You will be made aware of the criteria for assessment and the interview questions beforehand.

All candidates will be advised of the outcome of the interview.

Successful trainees will then be expected to attend an Induction Evening with the Employment Based Trainer from their training school in order to begin the Needs Analysis process. This leads to the preparation of the Individual Training Plan (ITP) that, in turn, forms the basis for the training. All trainees will be expected to attend up to 10 training days in a year.

Application Guidelines

Please complete the application form which will require information from both you and the school (if you have one) and e-mail to:

If you have been interviewed by a school and they are applying with you, they should send in their documentation as hard copy. (Available under "Guidance & Documentation for Schools" on the Essential Documents page)
