The Kent Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education:
REact: a creative vision for Religious Education
The current syllabus was introduced to Kent schools from January 2007 to be implemented during the academic year September 2007 to August 2008. A series of half day sessions for headteachers and governors ‘Introducing the Agreed Syllabus’ (link here to PowerPoint presentation given at these sessions) were held during February/March 2007 and similarly a series of half day sessions for RE subject leaders ‘Implementing the Agreed Syllabus’ were also held during that period. The Advisory Service Kent is, and will continue to provide a range on in-service training and professional development opportunities based around the Kent Agreed Syllabus.

Learning about and learning from Sikhism: the transition unit
A 56 page resource has been published and is in Kent schools now, to support teachers in Year 6 and Key Stage 3 in their planning and development of the transition unit as required by the Kent Agreed Syllabus.

From September 2007 one of the school-based Advanced Skills Teacher’s for RE will be leading on a small-scale but important project to produce examples of pupils work ‘leveled’ against the requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus. She is looking for examples of such work from Kent schools – if you think you might be able to help with examples of work – please register your interest with Pamela Draycott
I can can… statements can provide a very useful focus of RE development that aids both the teacher in their planning, task setting and assessment and makes learning more accessible for the pupils. Support for teaching Hinduism at Key Stage 1
Here is a PowerPoint presentation linked to the requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus on teaching Hinduism in Key Stage 1. The PowerPoint focuses on Hindu worship in the home and there are some background notes for teachers. Thanks go to Ushma Williams, the Hindu representative on Kent SACRE for sharing puja in her home with us.
Katie Milborrow of Hawkinge Primary School has kindly offered the following 'Thinking Starters' for teaching Hinduism (Year 2 Terms 1 & 2). Why not give them a go and see how your pupils respond?
Here is one possible way you can map the Hinduism section of the new Kent Agreed Syllabus REact for Key Stage 3. It was designed for a Grammar school so the targets and some of the assessment suggestion may have to be adapted for your context. Please note that the Year 7 and 8 Hinduism schemes are only a new term apart in reality so the differentiation between them is not as great as the differentiation between Year 8 and 9.
The scheme is provided in a PDF format and also as word documents so that they can be adapted to meet different school contexts.

Support for Teaching Islam (Key Stages 2 & 3)
In April/May 2008 the mosques at Margate and at Tunbridge Wells hosted twilight visits for teachers and TAs which together over 150 attended. Here are a few pictures of the interior of Margate Mosque that you may find helpful - the call to prayer, the prayer clocks and some of the prayer taking place in the mosque. Pictures of Tunbridge Wells will be added at a later date.
