Stephen Heppell: Student Voice Event
Posted: 02 July 2008

Stephen Heppell, described by Microsoft as “Europe’s leading online education expert”, facilitated a workshop for over 150 year 6 - 13 students from 28 Kent schools at Sandwich Technology School on 25 June 2008.

The workshop, one of a number of initiatives organised as part of the Kent BSF & Academies Programme, aimed to capture students' ideas about how and where they would like to learn in the future and to integrate these ideas into the development of new school facilities planned through the BSF Programme.

The half-day workshop saw the students working in mixed-age, mixed-school groups to prepare presentational "Blogs" around their ideas, linking these to a series of images uploaded by the students in advance of the workshop.

Each group of students also prepared a 1 minute film to discuss what they thought teachers should consider when planning for the new facilities.

The workshop ended with the students participating in live “Skype” discussions with students at schools in the Cayman Islands and Tasmania.

All the outputs of the event (films, images and texts) are being gathered together as a resource for school leaders, teachers, learners and officers to generate discussion about what C21st learning facilities might look like and, more importantly, what they should not look like.

The success of the initiative was evident in both the ideas and discussions it generated, as well as the enthusiasm and hard work of all the participating students.

Summary: This consultation seeks views on a range of proposals for how waves 7 - 15 of BSF are managed.

The DCSF are currently consulting on the arrangements for the future management of the national BSF programme, taking into account changes in government policy and the lessons learned for waves 1-6.

As well as proposals for the accelerated entry of waves 7-15, the consultation covers:

  • Prioritisation

  • General project size and school grouping
  • Readiness to deliver

To date, Kent has played a particularly active and high profile role within the national BSF Programme. We have secured more BSF funding than any other LA for Waves 3-6 and are already planning for our involvement in waves 7 and beyond.

Kent will be submitting its own response to the consultation and we would like to ensure that takes on board the views of colleagues participating in waves 3-6, as well as those schools who will be assigned to future waves.

If you would like your response to inform Kent's, please open the following link to our online consultation form: Kent BSF Online Consultation. Please note that the deadline for responses is 16 June 2008. Full details of the context and background to each question are included in the DCSF Consultation paper above.

If you would like to make an individual response, please open the following link to the DCSF Consulation site: www.dcsf.gov.uk/consultations/conDetails.cfm?consultationId=1538. The deadline for responses to the DCSF is

Wave 3 Open Exhibition / Planning Consultations
Posted: 15 March 2008

In support of the formal planning application process, Wave 3 schools held a series of Open Exhibitions and Consultation Evenings (February - March 2008). The events provided local residents and parents of students at the school with an opportunity to review the proposals and raise any concerns they may have about them. The events were supported by the architect and contractor responsible for delivering the new facilities, as well as members of the BSF Project Team.

For more details about the proposals for each school, including how the construction phases will be managed, please see the individual school brochures below.
