Further details regarding the Outdoor Education Unit |
The Outdoor Education Unit was established in April 2003 following the publication in 2002 by the Department for Children, Schools and Education (DCSF) of its 3 part supplement to the Health & Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits (HASPEV) (1998). These supplements made it very clear that all Local Authorities should have an Outdoor Education Advisor with a responsibility for 'approving' certain categories of visits on behalf of the Local Authority.

Richard Hayden was appointed to the post of Outdoor Education Advisor, and working with senior members of the Education Directorate, produced the framework for the approval of all educational visits. This was communicated to all schools and Youth & Community groups in October 2003 with the approvals system going live on 1st January 2004. The Local Authorities Approval Process Guidance Notes explaining the approval system for all educational visits can be found by following the link below.
