An Eco-School is a school committed to improving its environment; both inside the school buildings and outside in the school grounds.
Eco-Schools is an international programme that provides a structured approach to environmental education, involving pupils, teachers, parents and governors. Your school can make gradual improvements to the way it interacts with the environment and create links to other schools, both locally and globally.

All schools with a floor area of more than 1000 m2 should now have a Display Energy Certificate (DEC) with an energy efficiency rating. From September 2010, Green Flag applications will need to include the DEC energy efficiency rating. This is because carbon emissions related to energy and water consumption are a significant aspect of your school's carbon footprint contributing to climate change and reducing usage can also provide significant savings on utility bills.
The Council supports schools by providing interest free loans for energy efficiency projects which are then repaid from the energy savings. If you are interested in a loan or need some specialist advice for installing projects such as intelligent lighting controls, improving boiler controls, voltage optimisation technology, insulation or draughtproofing please contact us for more information.
Please note that the Council grants for renewable energy installations have now been fully allocated. Please act with caution and obtain advice from the Council's property team if approached by a company offering free electricity generating installations in return for the new Feed in Tariff money.
