Climate change and environmental performance

Help KCC reduce its impact on the environment and tackle the effects of climate change.

KCC logoOur quality of life is linked with the quality of our environment - and it is often taken for granted. It's easy to forget that the choices we make both at home and at work have an impact on the quality of life now and in the future.

CO2 logoKent County Council is committed to reducing our environmental footprint and reducing our carbon dioxide emissions.  Some climate change is already unavoidable and therefore also requires us to make sure our services are adapted to the future challenges and opportunities arising from climate change.  We also recognise we have a critical role in helping Kent’s businesses, communities and individuals understand their environmental footprint and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Please help! We need as many people in KASS as possible to contribute to help KCC reduce its impact on the environment and tackle the effects of climate change.

Taking Part

Normally you would have been asked to attend workshops, but in the spirit of reducing our environmental impact, we have devised a series of online training, surveys and discussion forums instead.

There will be three phases to this process, each taking around one hour to complete and open for a two week period. Each phase can be undertaken individually or, alternatively, you may like to discuss in your team and then nominate someone to enter your combined ideas and conclusions online

By the end of this process KASS will have developed;

  • A stronger environmental improvement plan
  • A risk-assessed and prioritised climate change adaptation plan

Phase 1

Phase 1 begins on 6 October 2008 and runs until the end of the month. You will be asked to:

  • complete basic awareness training
  • identify how KASS impacts on the environment
  • identify how climate change impacts on KASS services

Start Phase 1

Phase 2

Phase 2 will begin in November 2008 and will include:

  • feedback on the results of phase 1
  • assessing current office practices (our starting position)
  • an assessment of how our changing climate will impact individual service units within KASS
  • discussion forums – gathering your ideas, issues and concerns

Phase 3

Phase 3 will begin in December. It will include:

  • feedback on the results of phase 2 which will provide the focus for improvement plans
  • training in no-cost actions – engaging everyone in the process
  • identifying key actions and recruiting local champions (Green Guardians)
  • a risk-based approach to prioritise service adaptation needs and develop a climate change adaptation plan

Key Facts

Switch it off

KCC spent £15 million on energy bills in 2007. If all staff switched off lights, computers, printers and copiers overnight and switched off monitors when away from their desk, we could reduce energy use by 5%. That’s £750,000 off the energy bill.

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Wasted paper can be reduced by printing less, printing double-sided and re-using scrap paper. Recycling paper also reduces waste disposal costs. By reducing, re-using and recycling, staff at County Hall have saved KCC £15,000 in one year.
