Common Assessment Framework (CAF) and Lead Professional arrangements

The CAF is a common framework used by professionals across the children's sector for early assessment of children's needs.  A national requirement, CAF has been designed specifically to help practitioners assess unmet need at an early stage, before problems become complex and entrenched, and to promote effective integrated working and information sharing.

The Common Assessment process can only be undertaken with the full agreement and involvement of children/young people and/or their families.  The assessment is recorded on Kent's CAF Form.

What will happen when you complete a Common Assessment?

Central to the implementation of the Common Assessment Framework in Kent is the establishment of a multi-agency Single Point of Access meeting in each locality and the identification of a Lead Professional for children who require help from a range of different services.  The Single Point of Access brings managers of key services together and is designed to support those involved in co-ordinating and delivering an integrated service in response to the child's needs.

If you complete a Common Assessment, recorded on the CAF form, and send it to the Single Point of Access, you will be invited to a meeting to discuss what support is available.  There will be a number of agencies represented at that meeting who may be able to offer some support.  You will be asked to talk through the form and services that may help in a supportive environment.

For Kent Children's Trust guidance on when to use and not to use a CAF, please see the CAF Multi Agency Policy and Procedures

For further information on CAF, please see the main CAF website on Kent Trust Web.

The following leaflet is available for parents about CAF - "Welcome to a new way of helping children and young people".

CAF and related integrated working processes are a key part of what we need to do to promote early intervention and secure good outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.  Kent County Council has provided funding to enable us to increase the support we can provide for front line practitioners in using these arrangements, by recruiting a dedicated CAF Coordinator and CAF Administrator for Thanet.  Contact details will be provided here once the post holders have started.
