If you are the parent or guardian of a disabled child or young person you may be interested to know that you can now apply to funding for a 'short break'.   This funding has been allocated to support disabled children to 'aim high' and to improve their outcomes with the aim that disabled children and their families live an ordindary life.

Some discriptions of what a 'short break' is:-

  • Specialist breaks - e.g. overnight, exclusive clubs/activities at evenings/weekends/school holidays (delivered through multi-agency resource centres)
  • Community acitivities e.g. swimming, scouts (to make it inclusive)
  • Support to access local community/extended school short break activities.

Some examples of what it can't cover:-

  • Additional funding for a general 'disablity' worker in a universal setting.
  • Funding to alter premises for adjustments under disability legislation.
  • To fund family holidays.

The funding cannot be paid directly to families.  Applications will need to be endorsed by a professional wo knows the family and can confirm the child or young person has a disability.

Local Services Provision

In Shepway we have been working toward compiling information on the local service provision for children and young people which complements statutory services.  We have produced an excel spreadsheet to list what is available and to enable agencies to add their own details.

In addition you can link to the Kent Resource Directory which contains information on a range of facilities and services available to children and young people.  This has the facility to allow providers to add information on what they can provide and update this themselves.
