By 2009, the Government wants all schools to be working towards achieving healthy school status. From 2005 additional resources were allocated to local programmes to support the work. Every school has access to a local Healthy School Coordinator to provide support through the improvement process.

To be awarded healthy school status schools need to demonstrate evidence of good practice in the four core themes using a whole school approach and involving the whole school community. Each theme contains a list of the criteria which must be evidenced.

• Personal Social and Health Education including sex and relationships education and drug education (including alcohol, tobacco, and volatile substance abuse)
• Healthy eating
• Physical activity
• Emotional health and well-being (including bullying).
