Lots of drama at 2010/2011 competition final

This year the theme of the drama competition was: "Alcohol, Actions and Consequences: What might happen if...."

Hugh Christie Technology College walked off with the top prize of £1,000 towards drama equipment.

The school was one of six finalists that used dance, drama and music to get their message across to an audience of approximately 400 people.

Borden Grammar School took second and third place getting a total of £750 towards drama equipment.

Thamesview, St Simon Stock and Barton Court Grammar were runners up with each school receiving £150 towards drama equipment.  Students from all schools were presented with gift vouchers too.

Gemma Davies from Barton Court Grammar School won Best Performer.

The event was organised by Kent County Council, in partnership with the Kent Drug Alcohol Action Team and Kent Safe Schools.

Prevention-Smart Parents

The Mentor Foundation have launched a free e-learning course that emphasises the importance of parental influence and the family environment in preventing drug misuse, called "Prevention-Smart Parents".

The content is divided into easy-to-use chapters that provide comprehensive drug abuse prevention information for families with children of all ages. Each chapter is designed to actively engage users and provide practical resources for parents/caregivers to use at home and with their children.

Dr Ken Winters, who acted as a consultant to Mentor, says “When Mentor came to us, they asked for prevention strategies that are backed by science and tested in applied settings. A reliable finding from prevention research is that the most significant tools in drug misuse prevention are strong parenting and strong families. Prevention-Smart Parents is built around these findings.”
