E-Learning

E-Learning describes the use of use of digital and interactive technologies to achieve a personalised approach within all areas of education and children's services.

In 2005 the (then) DfES published the e-strategy 'Harnessing Technology: Transforming learning & children's services. The remit for delivery of the e-strategy is with Becta, the national agency for ICT in schools and FE colleges. Graham Badman, Managing Director of Children, Families and Education for Kent County Council is a Becta Board member.

The e-strategy supports the following:
  • National Digital Infrastructure - Strategic Technologies to support personalised learning, including broadband and Learning Platforms.
  • School Improvement - ICT Self Review Framework
  • Best Value Purchasing
  • Helping Schools manage ICT.
What is Kent LA doing to support e-learning?
  • Kent LA is nationally recognised as a leader in the use of technology in education. Kent has invested in providing schools with a high capacity broadband network - the Kent Community Network. This provides the infrastructure for connected services.
  • Kent is now rolling out the 'Kent Learning Zone', an innovative personalised e-learning infrastructure that can provide every child with a personal online learning space. The Kent Learning Zone is unique in offering schools a choice of virtual learning environments (VLE's) and services that can be 'plugged in'.
  • Kent has a large number of Schools that are nationally recognised as leaders in the creative use of technology.
  • Kent has a full time e-Learning Officer to support school leaders and Clusters.
E-learning is not about using technology for its own sake, but using it to create, learn, provide an authentic audience, link internationally, improve communications with parents and provide opportunities for collaboration. Using technology to enjoy and achieve!
