ICT Headteachers Conference 2008

Key Theme of the day:

Home Access

  • An exploration and debate about Home Access and it’s implications for Kent teaching and learning. Schools and
  • An opportunity to find out more and share ideas and experiences with others from across the County and will include a Key Note Speech from the Home Access Task Force.

A chance to participate in 3 facilitated debate sessions led by Independent Think Tank Demos.

The Event

On the 19th June 2008, the ICT Headteachers Conference took place in Maidstone. It was attended by over 100 delegates from across the county with representatives from Primary and Secondary Schools taking part.

The day commenced with an opening speech from Graham Badman, Managing director of CFHE and was followed by a Presentation from Home Access Taskforce team members from Shirelands Learning College, Stephen Rayner and Kirsty Tonks.

Delegates were then gathered into small groups to debate the first Issue “School’s Out – Future Thinking” and were facilitated by members of the Demos team and Kent County Council representatives.

After a refreshment break delegates saw a presentation on how Schools can use Open Source technology to support Home Access in Schools. The presentation was from Philippa Weaver from Sandwich technology and Paul Sharrad from Dover Grammar School for Boys.

Delegates then broke into groups again for the second facilitated debate session led by Demos – “Home Access – Parents, teachers and Pupils”.

After an enjoyable lunch, attendees were treated to a presentation from Alison Gaunt from the Malling Holmesdale Federation and four Year 7 pupils who explained how Home Access has supported and enhanced their learning.

Delegate then returned to their groups for the final facilitated debate session “What next? Key Principles for Home Access”

ICT innovator from Learning Potential, Andy Hutt then presented to attendees “A vision for the future” and gave an entertaining and motivational session about how technology and Home Access can engage learners.

The Demos team then fed back outcomes from the facilitated debate sessions. Demos have created a Powerpoint  and a Podcast to feedback and share the information and outcomes from the day.
