Race Equality Policy

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 came into force on 2 April 2001 and places a general statutory duty on schools to promote race equality. This general duty means that schools must aim to:

  • eliminate unlawful racial discrimination
  • promote equality of opportunity and
  • promote good race relations between people of different racial groups

To help schools to meet this general duty, they must prepare and maintain a Race Equality Policy. The policy should be approved by the governing body because it is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the school meets the duty.
