Performance Management Policy

The governing body must ensure that this policy is reviewed annually. The governing body has a duty to establish a written performance policy for their school. They may either formulate it themselves or direct the head teacher to formulate the policy. Where the head teacher formulates the policy, the governing body may modify it before accepting it or reject it. Where the policy is rejected by the governing body, they must then formulate the policy themselves. The Rewards and Incentive Group has produced a model performance management policy.

Before establishing or revising the policy, the governing body must ensure that all the teachers at the school are consulted on the draft policy and they must seek to agree the policy or any revisions to it with the recognised trade unions, having regard to the results of the consultation of all teachers. The head teacher and the governing body are responsible for implementing the Performance Management Policy. The head teacher is responsible for producing an annual written report about the operation of the performance management policy, the effectiveness of the school’s performance management procedures and the teachers’ training and development needs. The governing body must review the performance management policy annually and, where they see fit, revise the policy. The governing body has a duty to ensure that the performance of the teachers at their school is managed and reviewed in accordance with the school’s management policy and the regulations.
