Under Part 4 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, planning duties require local authorities and schools to develop accessibility strategies and plans, respectively to improve access to school education for disabled pupils. Existing strategies and plans covered the period 1 April 2003 to 31 March 2006. Local authorities and schools must review their strategies and plans to cover the next three year period 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2009. Schools are required to produce plans for their individual school and local authorities are required to prepare accessibility strategies covering the maintained schools in their areas. Governors are the responsible body to implement the plan.
