Developing a School Travel Plan

To begin developing your School Travel Plan we advise you initially get in contact with your local School Travel Advisor. They will be able to explain the process and where possible come out to your school, provide you with any additional guidance and answer any questions you may have.

Unfortunately with the high level of demand on the advisors they are not always able to come out and see you as quickly as they would like. We have therefore put together a ‘First Steps pack’ available to download from here that will assist you in beginning the development of a travel plan. This will involve you starting to progress the collection of data and begin consultation with various stakeholders in order to identify the local travel issues.

There are a number of resources available for you to download from this page including a general layout template for you to use as a guide, useful website links and survey templates to help you get started.

HealthySchools Validation

At present a large number of schools are working on getting Healthy Schools validation. In order to meet this part of the criteria, we are recommending that schools complete all of the ‘First Steps’.

Completing these first steps will assume you have begun work on your Travel Plan and will be expecting to complete and submit the final plan to us within the following 12 months from starting.

Select from the list below, your type of school. This will take you to a section tailored to assisting you in developing your travel plan.

 Primary Schools

Information and resources to assist Primary Schools in developing a Travel Plan

First Steps

Here you will find all the information required to start collecting information for your Travel Plan before your local School Travel Advisor comes to visit you.

1. Conduct a hands up survey with all pupils present on one particular day.

Please make sure you don’t change the categories, and check that you ask both questions, no matter how young the children are. Also keep a note of the date the survey was carried out, how many pupils took part and how many were absent.

2. Conduct a staff survey.

Again please note date and response rates, feel free to adapt parts of this survey to suit your needs, although the major emphasis on how people travel and what would make them change should remain.

3. Send out a survey to parents.

We would suggest sending one survey per family. Again, note how many were sent out, how many are returned and the rough date. Please adapt the suggestions for change in question 3 to suit your school’s situation.

4. Gathering further evidence for your travel plan.

Form a working party to include various people: e.g. governor, parent, community police officer or warden, members of School Council, local resident or member of Parish Council. You might think it appropriate to send a letter or leaflet out to local residents or put a notice in a parish magazine or local shop to explain what the school is doing. The group needs to draw together all the information concerning factors which affect people travelling to school. Take minutes or brief notes at any meetings you have.
